Job Description
Financial Controller
Location:Remote — Latin America or South Africa preferred · Full-timeHours:Must overlap U.S. Eastern business hoursReports to:Chief Financial OfficerFunction:Finance & Accounting
About the Company
We are a rapidly growing U.S.-based investment firm that acquires, builds, and scales consumer and e-commerce brands. Our platform pairs an operating business — a portfolio of high-growth online brands, including one ranked among the top sellers in its category — with a set of investment funds that back and expand those businesses.
We operate lean, move quickly, and hold our financial reporting to an institutional standard, because our numbers go in front of investors. The finance function is small, high-trust, and central to how the business is run.
About the Role
This is a newly prioritized hire created to give our CFO a true right hand. As the firm scales across both its operating brands and its funds, we need one person to own the accounting close and produce clean, investor-ready financials across multiple entities — without being asked twice.
This is a hands-on controller role, not a supervisory one. You will do the work: closing the books, preparing statements, reconciling accounts, and turning fast-moving, imperfect data into reporting our CFO can put in front of investors with confidence.
If you take pride in work products that are complete, accurate, and require no rework, this role is built for you.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
* Own the full month-end and quarter-end close across multiple entities
* Prepare complete, accurate financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow)
* Deliver reporting packages on schedule with minimal revision
Fund & Multi-Entity Accounting
* Maintain accurate books across the firm's operating entities and investment funds
* Support consolidation, intercompany transactions, and entity-level reporting
* Assist with fund-level reporting and investor allocations as needed
E-Commerce & Operational Finance
* Account for e-commerce and marketplace activity, including settlements, fees, and inventory/COGS
* Build and maintain brand- or SKU-level visibility into margins and performance
* Partner with operations to keep financial data clean at the source
Investor & Stakeholder Reporting
* Produce polished, investor-facing reporting and supporting schedules
* Respond to CFO and investor requests with fast, accurate, well-organized answers
Controls & Process
* Own reconciliations across bank, credit, and marketplace accounts
* Oversee AP/AR accuracy and cash reporting
* Maintain the chart of accounts and improve close processes as the firm scales
* Coordinate with external tax and audit partners
Required Qualifications
* 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle close ownership
* Strong command of U.S. GAAP and financial statement preparation
* Advanced Excel — fast, accurate, and comfortable with large, imperfect data sets
* A track record of clean, complete, audit-ready work products
* Near-native written and spoken English suitable for investor-facing communication
* High organization and the ability to manage multiple entities and deadlines independently
Preferred Qualifications
* Big 4 or top-tier public accounting training
* Public company accounting or reporting experience
* Fund or investment accounting experience
* E-commerce, marketplace, or Amazon-brand accounting experience
* CPA or local equivalent (e.g., Contador Público, CA, ACCA)
Ideal Candidate Profile
You are:
* Highly organized and detail-obsessed — your work is clean and complete the first time
* Proactive — you ask a sharp question early rather than deliver something that needs rework
* Fast with data and calm under a close deadline
* A polished communicator whose reporting an investor could read without a second thought
* Comfortable operating with autonomy in a fast-moving environment
* Someone who takes ownership of the numbers as if the business were your own
Why Join Us
You will work directly with the CFO of a growing investment firm, with real ownership of the finance function and clear visibility into how the business is built. This is a role for someone who wants their work to be seen and to matter — not to sit in a back office processing transactions.
Tips for South African Applicants
Timezone Advantage
South Africa (SAST, UTC+2) overlaps well with European business hours and has a few hours of overlap with US East Coast. Mention your timezone flexibility in your application.
Salary in Context
At R74,000/month, this role pays well above the average South African remote salary. The USD equivalent ($4,000/mo) benefits from the favourable exchange rate.
Application Tips
Tailor your CV to international standards — use a clean format, highlight remote work experience, and include your English proficiency. Many SA applicants succeed by emphasising their strong work ethic and cultural adaptability.
Load Shedding Preparedness
If you're applying for a remote role, having a backup power solution (UPS, inverter, or generator) and mobile data as a backup internet connection shows employers you're prepared for South Africa's infrastructure challenges.
